Description

The history of the North Australia Observer Unit, World War 2. In 1942 when an invasion of Australia seemed imminent, it was decided to form a secret unit of mounted troops to keep surveillance on vulnerable northern coastline. The task was given to an anthropologist and army adviser, Major William Stanner, who within weeks had in position his under-trained but enthusiastic force of the North Australia Observer Unit.

These 500 men and their Aboriginal guides, were stretched from Wyndham in the west to Cape York in the east - an almost impossible area to watch properly. had there been an invasion, those few men and their potable radios were expected to shadow the enemy, and only attack where guerrilla tactics provided an advantage. As it transpired, the invasion never came and the months of exploring, patrolling, false alarms and sheer survival in the harsh country of the outback, was all in vain. This is a side of out military history that should be read by everyone and particularly those who know or would like to know about the remote outback.
