Desert Scorpians is the story of 459 Squadron RAAF. Formed in Egypt in February 1942, the squadron was initially equipped with Hudson aircraft and later converted to Venturas and Baltimores. Its operations ranged from ant-submarine and convoy escort patrols, including the sinking of U-97, to highly dangerous low level anti-shipping strikes and formation bombing raids on strongly defended land targets. These roles were closely linked to the fortunes of the see-sawing land battles that raged along the North African Coast. Operating from thoroughly inhospitable desert landing grounds, the air and ground crews endured the extremes of heat, sandstorms and floods, to achieve a record second to none on the Desert Air Force.
