AE1 Entombed, But Not Forgotten: Foster, John.
Description
From Book Cover Description:
This is an account of a very brief life of the HMA Submarine AE1, the circumstances surrounding her loss and the author's attempts to locate the wreck in Papua New Guinea waters.
Having sailed from England to Australia in 1914, she was sent on her very first operational deployment as part of the Australian force that was sent to capture German New Guinea.
Shortly after arriving off New Britain the submarine was lost with all hands, having been in Australian Navy service for a mere six months. She was lost, either from the result of unreported enemy action or, from an unknown accident. It remains on of the Royal Australian Navy's enduring maritime mysteries.
This story is written to document the events relevant to her loss, to honour the men who sailed her and to attempt to stimulate interest in a little-remembered event in Australia's wartime history.
